Alpha-2 Macroglobulin (A2M)

Alpha-2 Macroglobulin (A2M), like PRP injections, uses components of the body’s own blood to stimulate healing. Specifically, it is a protein found in the blood that works as a “firewall” to block further enzymatic breakdown of proteins in the body, including cartilage. This can act as a shield against further arthritic progression in synovial joints such as the knees, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, and ankles. To obtain this protein, the blood is drawn, and then spun down and put through a protein concentrator. The final solution is then injected into the desired joint to aid with further protection of the joints’ integrity.

What does Alpha-2 Macroglobulin do?

The main function of α-2 macroglobulin is the inhibition of proteinases released during tissue injury and inflammatory markers at the site of inflammation, thus protecting the tissues from excessive and uncontrolled proteolytic activity.

What are the benefits of Alpha-2-Macroglobulin (A2M) Injections?

  • Prevents further cartilage loss.
  • Promotes growth of healthy tissue around the joint.
  • Improves overall joint function.
  • Provides an alternative to surgery.

Do A2M Injections Work?

A2M is a safe and effective treatment for many joint pain conditions, including: Osteoarthritis (Knee arthritis, Hip arthritis), Joint injuries (Shoulder, Knee, Elbow, Rotator cuff), Labral Tear.

How long do A2M Injections last?

If we are treating damage to a tendon or ligament, the repair is permanent. For chronic inflammatory conditions like osteoarthritis, it typically lasts for two years.

Is A2M FDA Approved?

It has been scientifically proven to stop the progression of joint cartilage and disc degeneration. The APIC device was developed by Cytonics Corporation to prepare A2M from a patient’s own blood. Worldwide, it is the only FDA-approved device available for this purpose.
